Add space and value — often without needing permission.Rear extensions are a popular way to increase living space and boost property value. Thanks to
Permitted Development (PD) rights, many can be built without formal planning approval.
Permitted if your extension:- Extends no more than 3m from the original rear wall (or 4m for detached homes)
- Is no taller than 4m
- Doesn’t cover more than 50% of your land
- Leaves at least 7m of garden space (for two-storey builds)
Bonus:Since 2021, you may extend up to 6m (or 8m for detached homes) under the Neighbour Consultation Scheme giving you more flexibility.
